Durban

Durban's fine beaches and many hotels make it South Africa's premier holiday resort. This city, named in 1835 after the Governor of the Cape, Sir Benjamin D'Urban, is one of the fastest-growing urban conglomerations in the world. Like most urban centres in South Africa, it is a mixture of downtown skyscrapers and neat middle-class suburbs, with sprawling townships and shacklands around the perimeter. With its superb natural harbour, it has long been the country's largest, busiest port.

Although Durban can be uncomfortably hot and humid in midsummer, for most of the year it enjoys wonderfully mild, sunny weather. The city is very much geared to low- and middle-income tourism, with many activities for families and fun-lovers along the beachfront. Watersports, fishing, golf, shops, restaurants, rickshaw rides, snake parks - Durban has them all.
